Indian Companies Are Second-Largest Employers in Nigeria : Indian High Commissioner

India’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, G Balasubramanian, has highlighted the growing strength of India-Nigeria relations ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to the country. Balasubramanian emphasized that PM Modi’s first trip to West Africa marks a significant milestone in strengthening ties with Nigeria and the African continent.

Nigeria, as the most populous country and one of Africa’s largest economies, is a key partner for India. Indian investments in Nigeria are substantial, with over 200 Indian companies contributing more than $27 billion to the economy. These companies collectively rank as the second-largest employers in Nigeria, following the Nigerian government.

“The relationship between India and Nigeria has deep historical roots, with India establishing a diplomatic presence in Lagos two years before Nigeria’s independence in 1960. Bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the nations has remained strong over the decades,” Balasubramanian stated.

PM Modi’s visit comes as a follow-up to his meeting with Nigerian President Bola Ahme Tinubu during the G20 Summit in 2023. This visit aims to reinforce the strategic partnership built on shared democratic values and foster cooperation in areas such as trade, manufacturing, technology, and culture.

During his visit, PM Modi will participate in several key engagements, including a ceremonial reception, one-on-one discussions with President Tinubu, delegation-level talks, the signing of MoUs, and an official banquet. He will also meet members of the Indian community in Nigeria.

Balasubramanian underscored the robust cultural and educational ties between the two nations, citing the thousands of Nigerian students studying in India and the significant medical tourism from Nigeria to India. Capacity-building initiatives have further strengthened the partnership.

India and Nigeria have recently expanded their collaboration through agreements in customs cooperation, cultural exchange, and technology-based solutions, including fintech, agriculture, mining, and space exploration. Balasubramanian expressed optimism that PM Modi’s visit will further deepen the already strong relationship between the two nations.
