Every year on October 8, Indian Air Force Day is celebrated for the founding of one of the country's most prestigious military forces. The Indian Air Force (IAF), which was established in 1932, is essential to safeguarding India's skies and assisting with both humanitarian and domestic efforts. The day honors IAF personnel's bravery, commitment, and hard work. The numerous technological developments that have bolstered the Air Force over the years are also highlighted. These upgrades have helped the IAF better protect India’s airspace and surrounding areas, while also improving its ability to respond to disasters and emergencies efficiently.
The Chief of the Air Staff has addressed on the eve of 93rd Air Force Day.
PM Modi greeted the Indian Army on the Indian Force Day, "All the courageous Air Warriors and their families on Air Force Day. The Indian Air Force epitomises bravery, discipline and precision. They have played a vital role in safeguarding our skies, including during the most challenging situations. Their role during natural calamities is also very commendable. Their commitment, professionalism and indomitable spirit continue to make every Indian proud."
Indian Air Force (IAF) Day is observed every year on October 8, honoring one of India’s most respected armed forces. Founded in 1932 as the Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF), the IAF took its first operational flight on April 1, 1933, with six RAF-trained officers and 19 Havai Sepoys. After India gained independence in 1947, the “Royal” prefix was removed, formally establishing the Indian Air Force.
The IAF plays a crucial role in safeguarding India’s airspace and responding to emergencies. From war operations to humanitarian missions, the force ensures national security while delivering timely disaster relief. Key operations include the Indo-Pak wars (1947, 1965, 1971, 1999), the Sino-Indian War (1962), Operation Poomalai (1987), and Operation Safed Sagar during the Kargil War (1999).
IAF Day features grand parades, aerial displays, and exhibitions highlighting operational readiness and technological advancements. The 2025 parade will take place at Hindon Air Base, with previous celebrations held in Chennai (2024) and Prayagraj (2023). A special flypast is expected in Guwahati in mid-November.
