In a significant move towards bolstering bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, Union Minister for Power Manohar Lal, along with Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shripad Naik, held discussions with a US delegation led by John Podesta, Senior Advisor to the US President for International Climate Policy. The talks emphasized the India-US partnership’s critical role in driving the global clean energy transition.
The meeting, held on Thursday, focused on expanding collaboration in key areas such as clean energy, energy storage systems, and energy efficiency. In a press release, the Ministry of Power noted that Minister Manohar Lal highlighted the long-standing relationship between India and the US and reaffirmed India’s commitment to a “clean” energy future that supports economic growth and development. He also emphasized the significance of ongoing engagements under the “Power & Energy Efficiency Pillar” of the Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP), led by India’s Ministry of Power.
John Podesta, representing the US, acknowledged India as a valuable partner and highlighted the shared commitment to building resilient supply chains and fostering investment-led growth. He expressed optimism about potential collaboration in clean energy initiatives and supporting India in scaling up its manufacturing capabilities.
Discussions covered a broad range of topics, including technical exchanges for upgrading grid transmission systems to meet future load growth, policy consultations, and financial support for modernization efforts. The two sides explored opportunities to enhance India’s manufacturing capacity, particularly in producing large transformers, with an aim to reduce import dependency.
Key areas of focus also included potential state-to-state partnerships for long-duration energy storage studies and collaboration on grid-scale battery storage solutions. Additionally, the talks addressed the need to stimulate manufacturing projects and policies that would boost India’s capacity to produce and export high-efficiency air conditioning systems and fans.
The Ministry of Power emphasized that the discussions reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to deepening cooperation in advancing the global clean energy transition.
