India Strengthens Diaspora Ties: MEA Highlights Achievements

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has significantly enhanced its engagement with the Indian diaspora. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) detailed several initiatives aimed at ensuring the welfare and active involvement of Indians abroad in India’s growth story.

Key Initiatives to Empower the Diaspora

Over the past decade, India has launched programs such as E-Migrate, MADAD, and the Upgraded Pravasi Bima Yojana to safeguard and support Indian nationals overseas. Community wings at Missions and Posts abroad have adopted a “people-first” approach, actively engaging with the diaspora.

The upcoming Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) in Odisha aligns with this vision, providing a platform to celebrate the contributions of the Indian diaspora and explore opportunities for collaboration.

Odisha: The Focus of India’s Purvodaya Plan

Odisha, with its strategic location and rich maritime history, is set to play a pivotal role in India’s Act East Policy. Its coastline, natural resources, and well-developed ports position it as a hub for economic opportunities in the ASEAN region and the Indo-Pacific.

The state leads in industries such as mining, iron and steel manufacturing, marine economy, and IT services, making it a prime destination for global investors. Indian IT giants have already established a presence in Odisha, boosting its knowledge economy.

Cultural and Historical Significance

Odisha’s historical ties with Southeast Asia are evident through its age-old maritime connections, celebrated during events like Bali Yatra. Merchants, monks, and travelers from Odisha have historically influenced Southeast Asian culture, as reflected in the enduring legacy of the Ramayana across these regions.

The PBD event will include a Ramayana Exhibition, showcasing how the epic traveled to Southeast Asia and remains celebrated in countries like Indonesia and Sri Lanka.

Showcasing Odisha’s Tourism Potential

PM Modi’s ‘Chalo India’ tourism campaign encourages the diaspora to visit India with foreign friends. Odisha offers rich cultural heritage, national parks, pristine beaches, and religious sites. The PBD convention will highlight these attractions, positioning Odisha as a top tourism destination.

Spotlight on Indian Diaspora Achievements

The PBD event will feature exhibitions such as:

  • Ramayana: A Cultural Journey
  • Technology and the Diaspora
  • Archiving Diaspora History

These exhibits will celebrate the contributions of the Indian diaspora in promoting Indian culture, values, and ethos worldwide.

The Role of Diaspora in India’s Growth

The Indian diaspora serves as a “living bridge” between India and their adopted countries, contributing to India’s international engagements and economic growth. The PBD convention will explore ways the diaspora can aid in achieving PM Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).
