In response to a U.S. official’s criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Russia, India emphasized its right to determine its foreign relations based on its own interests. The Ministry of External Affairs underscored the historical ties between India and Russia, highlighting that all nations have the autonomy to shape their bilateral relationships as they see fit.
During a press briefing, Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “India’s enduring relationship with Russia is grounded in mutual interests. In a multipolar world, every country has the freedom to make its own choices. It’s important for all to recognize and respect these realities.”
The U.S. concerns were raised during a Congressional hearing where Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Donald Lu, expressed disappointment over the timing and symbolism of Modi’s Moscow visit. He mentioned that the visit occurred amidst ongoing conflict in Ukraine and noted that India did not finalize significant defense or technology agreements during the trip.
Lu also highlighted that India’s defense imports from Russia have diminished, pointing out that India has canceled substantial defense deals due to delivery issues. Despite these challenges, Lu acknowledged India’s position on the war, as Modi conveyed that conflicts cannot be resolved solely through military means.
Modi’s visit, which took place in early July, celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Russia. During the visit, Modi received the Order of St Andrew the Apostle from President Vladimir Putin, recognizing his role in strengthening bilateral ties.
