Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, calling it a fresh boost for tourism in the island nation. He described India as a key contributor to Maldives’ tourism sector.
“India is one of the major countries supporting our tourism. With the Prime Minister’s visit, we expect further growth and stronger people-to-people ties,” Muizzu said, as Modi wrapped up his two-day trip.
President Muizzu also expressed hope about finalising a free trade agreement with India soon. “We’ve started the discussions, and I’m very hopeful we’ll conclude them soon,” he said.
He described India as a “crucial partner” and acknowledged the long-standing support New Delhi has extended over the years. “We’ve all seen how India has helped Maldives in the past—and there’s no doubt it will continue to play a vital role in our future,” Muizzu added. When asked about his own visit to India, Muizzu replied that he hoped to travel “soon—either this year or in the near future.”
Prime Minister Modi attended the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations in Male as the Guest of Honour. His visit was the first by a foreign leader since President Muizzu took office. It also marked a turning point in India-Maldives relations, which had suffered strains due to Muizzu’s earlier ‘India Out’ campaign during his election run.
Relations began improving after Muizzu’s visit to India in October last year. During Modi’s recent trip, both countries signed multiple memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and officially launched discussions on a bilateral free trade agreement.
India also announced a ₹4,850 crore Line of Credit for infrastructure development in the Maldives. To mark 60 years of diplomatic relations, the two nations released a joint commemorative stamp.
Calling India “Maldives’ closest and most trusted partner,” Muizzu emphasized that cooperation between the two neighbours would continue to grow.
