India has officially launched next-generation e-passports under the upgraded Passport Seva Programme V2.0. All new passport applications and renewals—both in India and abroad—will now receive chip-enabled booklets. This marks a major shift in how Indian citizens travel and verify identity globally.

What Are e-Passports?

The new e-passports come with embedded RFID chips. These chips store personal and biometric data like fingerprints and facial recognition. The booklets also feature interlocking microletters and relief tints for added security.

Officials confirm, “India already began issuing only e-passports from May 2025,” making them the default format for all future passports.

Key Benefits for Travellers

These biometric passports offer several advantages:

– Faster immigration clearance through contactless verification.
– Stronger protection against fraud and identity theft.
– Global compatibility with electronic systems used in over 120 countries.

The RFID chip follows International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards and uses advanced encryption for secure data handling.

What Happens to Old Passports?

Existing non-electronic passports will remain valid until their expiry date. “Citizens do not need to replace their ordinary passports prematurely,” say officials. The full transition to e-passports will be completed by June 2035, allowing a smooth shift for all users.

Indigenous Tech for Data Sovereignty

India is also building its own operating systems to manage passport data. This move ensures cybersecurity and data sovereignty. Biometric details will instantly match with central databases to prevent fraud.

Passport Seva Programme V2.0: What’s New?

Launched in early 2025, Passport Seva 2.0 brings a tech-driven overhaul to passport services. It includes:

– AI-powered chat and voice bots for application help.
– Online uploads, auto-filled forms, and UPI/QR code payments.
– Multi-language support and electronic signatures.
– Integration with DigiLocker, Aadhaar, and PAN for document verification.

The system operates across 37 Passport Offices, 93 Passport Seva Kendras, and 450 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras, ensuring wide accessibility.

Boost to India’s Digital Diplomacy

Beyond domestic convenience, e-passports strengthen India’s global image. With biometric passports now standard, India joins the ranks of digitally advanced nations. This move supports smoother international travel and enhances diplomatic credibility.
