India has officially placed its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad in Gujarat chosen as the host city. This is not just about bringing back one of the world’s biggest sporting events to India.
It is also about showing India’s growing confidence as a global sporting hub. If the bid succeeds, Ahmedabad will get the chance to host the special 100th anniversary edition of the Games, making it a historic moment for India and the entire Commonwealth.
Proposal Submitted in London
A team from the Commonwealth Games Association of India (CGAI) and the Gujarat government submitted the official bid in London. The group was led by Harsh Sanghavi, India’s Minister of State for Sports. He explained why Ahmedabad is the right choice to host the Games.
The Indian government has already backed the plan, calling Ahmedabad the “ideal” host city. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA), led by PT Usha, also gave its full support earlier, strengthening India’s chances.

Why Ahmedabad?
Ahmedabad has grown into one of India’s most modern cities in recent years. The bid shows off its world-class stadiums, smooth public transport, modern hotels, and smart city planning.
Officials said that Ahmedabad’s compact design will make travel easier for athletes, officials, and fans, which is an important factor for hosting a global sporting event.
Special 100-Year Celebration
The 2030 Games are unique because they will mark 100 years since the Commonwealth Games began. Minister Harsh Sanghavi said this edition would be important not just for India but for the entire Commonwealth family.
The Games will be guided by Indian values like Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — “the world is one family.” To show Indian hospitality, the idea of Atithi Devo Bhava — “the guest is divine” — will be at the heart of the hosting plan.

IOA’s Support & Vision
PT Usha, president of the Indian Olympic Association and CGAI, said the Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad would highlight both India’s sports strength and its culture of friendship and inclusivity.
She added that hosting the 100th edition will inspire young athletes in India to dream big and aim higher in sports, leaving behind a legacy for the future.
Bid with Symbolic Timing
The proposal was submitted on August 29, National Sports Day, which is celebrated in memory of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. Officials said this date was chosen on purpose to connect India’s proud sporting past with its future goals. It reflects India’s strong focus on youth and its commitment to growing as a sports nation.
Looking Beyond 2030
There is more to India’s proposal than just hosting the Games in 2030. Organizing such a large tournament will boost Gujarat’s sporting infrastructure, inspire more youth to participate in sports, and enhance India’s reputation as a global sporting powerhouse.
If it succeeds, it will be the largest multisport event in India since the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010.
