The European Union (EU) has set forth an updated strategic roadmap to redefine its engagement with India. The plan is released from Brussels on Wednesday and seeks to enhance cooperation between the two regions on trade, technology, security and global governance.
As the world becomes more volatile, this initiative holds up the idea of trustworthy partnerships, with India being placed at the forefront of the EU’s longer-term vision.
What President von der Leyen Stated
European Commission President von der Leyen said the EU was India’s largest trading partner and reiterated the EU’s will to have the much-awaited Free Trade Agreement (FTA) finalized by the end of 2025. “Europe is open for business,” she said, adding that the EU was looking forward to investing together with India for mutually beneficial outcomes for their futures.

She reiterated that it was time to focus on partnerships based on common values and strategic interests as she endorsed the agenda with the 2024-2029 political roadmap.

What are the Five Pillars of Cooperation?
The joint document structures India-EU cooperation into five major pillars as:
- Prosperity & Sustainability: This will focus on trade strengthening, investment flow enhancement and FTA closure.
- Technology & Innovation: This aims to cooperate on state of the art areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductor development, high-performance computing and space technologies.
- Security & Defence: This enhanced cooperation on regional and global security including the initiatives on maritime security, cyber resilience and counterterrorism.
- Connectivity & Global Governance: This cooperation on multilateral reforms including updating UN and WTO frameworks and common action on climate and human rights issues.
- People to People Exchange: This will focus on skill mobility for the digital area, academic co-operation and increasing cultural diplomacy.
What the Future Holds
This evolving partnership reflects a common hope of shaping a more secure, equitable and resilient global order. Converging interests around supply chain diversification, defense innovation and digital transformation mean there is plenty for India and the EU to collaboratively lead around the world.
This strategy is an overture not only of cooperation, but rather the locus for nurturing a strong geopolitical alliance founded on trust, innovation and joint prosperity.
