On July 26, 2025, India observes the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas with solemnity. The Indian Armed Forces’ valor and sacrifice during the 1999 Kargil War are commemorated on this day. Leaders, military authorities, and common citizens all throughout the nation honored the valiant soldiers who toiled valiantly to defend the nation’s sovereignty in the challenging terrain of Jammu and Kashmir.

President Droupadi Murmu wrote, “This day represents the incredible bravery, courage, and unwavering resolve of our jawans.” The troops’ valor in protecting the nation’s honor was echoed by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, who described their final sacrifices as a “timeless reminder of the unwavering resolve of our Armed Forces.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked, “This occasion reminds us of the unparalleled courage and valor of those brave sons of Mother India who gave their lives to protect the nation’s pride.” Future generations will always be inspired by their courage to sacrifice all for their nation. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge were among the leaders from all political parties who paid their respects, demonstrating the nation’s gratitude to the martyrs and their families.

The National War Memorial in New Delhi hosted the day’s formal ceremonies. The slain soldiers were honored by Chief of Defense Staff General Anil Chauhan, Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. N.S. Raja Subramani, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, and Chief of Air Staff Marshal A.P. Singh. To foster in the youth a sense of patriotism and reverence for the Armed Forces, public institutions across hosted memorial ceremonies featuring patriotic plays, lectures, and music.

In the Kargil War of 1999, Indian forces launched Operation Vijay to expel Pakistani intruders who had seized important heights in the rugged northern Kargil district. Vijay Diwas commemorates India’s resounding victory in this conflict. Despite difficult obstacles like inclement weather in the mountains and difficult terrain, India’s troops reclaimed key locations, notably the vital Tiger Hill. This demonstrated their extraordinary fighting spirit and tactical skill.

As the nation commemorates this significant triumph on its 26th anniversary, Kargil Vijay Diwas will endure as a somber reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering determination of India’s warriors. People all throughout the nation will never forget it.
