In a significant step towards resolving humanitarian and livelihood concerns, India and Bangladesh are set to exchange 185 fishermen on January 5, 2025. The operation, facilitated by their respective Coast Guards, aims to return 95 Indian and 90 Bangladeshi fishermen to their home countries, along with eight detained fishing vessels.

Why the Repatriation is Necessary

Many fishermen from both nations have been inadvertently crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line, leading to arrests and detentions. Such incidents often stem from a lack of awareness about maritime boundaries or adverse weather conditions pushing boats into foreign waters.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted its dedication to the safety and welfare of Indian fishermen. “The Government of India has worked assiduously to secure the release of our fishermen from Bangladesh custody,” the MEA said.

Similarly, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted its commitment to the process, emphasizing the joint efforts of multiple agencies, including the Coast Guard, fisheries, and local administrations.

Details of the Exchange

  • Indian Fishermen: 95 fishermen detained in Bangladesh, along with six fishing boats, will be handed over to Indian authorities at sea.
  • Bangladeshi Fishermen: 90 fishermen detained in India, along with two fishing vessels, will be repatriated to Bangladesh.

The handover will occur at the International Maritime Boundary on January 5, 2025. Bangladeshi fishermen are expected to return to Chattogram by January 6, 2025.

A Coordinated Effort

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that 95 Indian fishermen were detained in October and November 2024, while 78 Bangladeshi fishermen were apprehended by Indian authorities in December 2024. Additionally, 12 Bangladeshi fishermen detained after their boat sank in September 2024 have also been released.

This operation underscores the ongoing collaboration between the two nations to resolve issues impacting vulnerable fishing communities.

Conclusion

The mutual release and repatriation of fishermen reflect the strong bilateral ties between India and Bangladesh and their commitment to humanitarian concerns. By addressing these challenges, both nations reaffirm their dedication to protecting the livelihoods of their coastal communities.
