Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the elevation of India-Brunei relations to an “Enhanced Partnership” during his address at a banquet hosted by Brunei Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah on Wednesday. Modi expressed gratitude for the Sultan’s warm welcome and highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties shared by the two nations, marking the 40th anniversary of their political relations this year.
In his speech, Modi outlined several areas of enhanced cooperation, including economic, scientific, and strategic sectors. He noted discussions with the Sultan about long-term cooperation in LNG and strengthening collaboration in the space sector. Modi also announced the upcoming introduction of direct flights between the two countries.
The Prime Minister emphasized mutual cooperation in agriculture, industry, pharmaceuticals, health, technology, and cybersecurity. He also mentioned positive discussions on defense industry training and capacity building. The cooperation in space will include satellite development, remote sensing, and training.
Highlighting the contributions of the Indian community in Brunei, Modi praised their positive impact on Brunei’s economy and society. He also commended Brunei’s progress under Sultan Bolkiah’s leadership and the vision of ‘Wawasan 2035’.
Modi thanked the royal family for their hospitality and described Brunei as a crucial partner in India’s Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific vision. He reiterated India’s commitment to ASEAN centrality, freedom of navigation, and a development-focused approach in the region.
Earlier, Modi met with Sultan Bolkiah and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral ties. Modi’s visit also included inaugurating the new Chancery of the High Commission of India in Bandar Seri Begawan and visiting Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque.
Following his visit to Brunei, PM Modi will travel to Singapore for a two-day visit from September 4-5.
