As the country prepares to celebrate Independence Day on August 15, Delhi-NCR will be subject to severe traffic restrictions and intense security. While other ceremonial events such as the Delhi Chief Minister's flag hoisting at Chhatrasal Stadium, are anticipated to attract sizable audiences, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak to the nation from the landmark Red Fort.

The Delhi Traffic Police has issued an urgent advisory for commuters, warning of road closures, diversions, and restrictions starting Thursday night in some areas, and from 6 am on Friday in others.

Road Closures in Delhi Ahead of the Red Fort Event

Key routes around Red Fort will be sealed off starting Thursday night to facilitate the Prime Minister’s security arrangements. Additional diversions will be in place from Friday morning, especially in central and north Delhi.

In addition to the main Independence Day program at the Red Fort, the Chhatrasal Stadium event will see the Delhi chief minister hoist the national flag. Heavy footfall is expected, with traffic likely to be affected in the surrounding areas from 6 AM onwards.

NCR-Wide Heavy Vehicle Ban

Authorities in Faridabad have announced a complete ban on heavy vehicle entry into Delhi from 10 pm on August 14 till 2 pm on August 15. The restriction will apply to several key routes, including

  • Badarpur Border
  • Prahladpur
  • Karni Singh Shooting Range
  • Surajkund Chowk
  • Durga Builder
  • Mangar Police Checkpoint
  • Dera Fatehpur
  • Sector 30 Cut
  • Delhi-Mumbai Expressway
  • Sikri, Palwal Road, and Elson JCB Chowk

In Gurugram, traffic restrictions will be enforced from 5 pm on August 14 till 1:30 pm on August 15, affecting all routes leading towards Delhi. Motorists are advised to avoid Delhi-bound roads during this period.

Alternate Routes and Parking Guidelines

Commuters traveling between states or districts have been advised to use the KMP Expressway to bypass Delhi traffic. Parking should be done only at designated spots to avoid towing or penalties.

For vehicles approaching from Chilla Red Light (border) intending to cross Delhi, a U-turn can be taken at Chilla itself to connect to the Noida–Greater Noida Expressway, leading to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway.

Similarly, vehicles from DND (border) will need to take a U-turn at DND Toll Plaza and follow the Noida–Greater Noida Expressway to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway to reach their destinations without entering Delhi.
