This year’s election for the Speaker of the Lok Sabha is set to be intriguing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will propose the candidate on June 25 in a special Parliamentary session, followed by voting by newly elected MPs the next day. With the BJP relying on its NDA allies for a third term, there has been significant discussion and competition for the influential post. Potential candidates include BJP’s Andhra Pradesh president Daggubati Purandeswari, first-time TDP MP GM Harish Balayogi, and seven-term BJP MP Bhratruhari Mahtab. Current Speaker Om Birla is also a contender. The Opposition may field a candidate if denied the deputy Speaker role once more, a position vacant in the previous Lok Sabha.
