IMD predicts rise in temperature across eastern India amid heatwave conditions

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a further rise in temperatures in eastern India amid extensive reports of heatwave conditions in several states. The weather bureau reports that eastern India could see highs of 44 degrees Celsius this week.

Over the past week, the weather department has observed a rise in temperature by four to six degrees above normal in northern, southern, and eastern states.

Regarding the ongoing heatwave situation in Delhi, the MeT department has indicated a temperature increase in the national capital region. While Delhi’s temperature is expected to hover around 38 degrees Celsius for the next 2-3 days, it may rise by 1-2 degrees thereafter. The IMD also anticipates a similar increase in the temperature of Delhi-NCR in the coming days.

IMD Senior Scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar addressed the media, stating, “In Delhi, we anticipate the temperature to remain around 38 degrees Celsius in the next 2-3 days. Subsequently, there could be a gradual rise of 1-2 degrees, accompanied by a possibility of light rain tomorrow… In Eastern India, temperatures have already touched 44 degrees Celsius in a few stations. Over the next 4-5 days, temperatures may reach 44 degrees Celsius in Eastern India, while Northwest India may experience temperatures near 40 or even surpassing 41 degrees Celsius.”

Dr. Kumar emphasized that heatwave conditions are currently prevalent in India and are expected to intensify further over the next 4-5 days. He mentioned a red alert issued for West Bengal due to the soaring temperatures and an orange alert for Odisha.

Additionally, concerning the weather in southern states, the department has issued a ‘Hot and Humid’ weather warning for Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh for the next four days.
