IMD Issues Red Alerts For Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala; Schools Closed Due To Heavy Rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rainfall alerts for several states, including parts of Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa. In response to the heavy rainfall forecast, schools in multiple districts have been closed. The monsoon is shifting downward and is expected to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to coastal regions of Kerala, Karnataka, and Konkan Goa this week.

In response to the heavy rainfall, the Goa education department declared a holiday for schools up to Class 12 on Monday, July 15. The IMD issued a red alert for parts of Goa, as well as for Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod in Kerala. An orange alert was issued for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. Schools and colleges in six districts of Kerala will remain closed on July 15.

Mumbai suburbs are also under a red alert, with reports of heavy waterlogging due to continuous downpour and thunderstorms. An orange alert is in effect for Thane, Raigad, and Pune, while Mumbai and Palghar are under a yellow alert.

In Delhi NCR, light rain and moderate winds are expected in the coming days, but no alerts have been issued for the national capital. Rain on Saturday morning caused waterlogging and traffic issues in parts of Delhi and Noida, bringing some relief from the July heat.

“The monsoon is moving southward starting today. We are issuing a red alert for coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Konkan Goa for the coming days, with expected rainfall exceeding 20 cm. Delhi-NCR will experience light rain in the coming days, but no alerts have been issued for Delhi,” IMD scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar told ANI.
