This year 2025 India grapple with massive rainfall leading to wide-scale natural disasters, crop destruction, and unexpected damages, the focus is now on the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The India Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall warning in the region starting from Sunday.
Tamil Nadu is India's southernmost state, situated at the southernmost tip of the subcontinent. It borders the states of Kerala in the west, Karnataka in the northwest, and Andhra Pradesh in the north.
Critically, its eastern and southern boundaries are framed by the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean, respectively, making its long coastline highly vulnerable to weather systems developing over the sea, like the current low-pressure area. Its capital city is Chennai.
It uses color coding to assist the citizens in understanding the gravity of the imminent weather, thereby enabling them to take precautions.
ORANGE ALERT: Be Prepared
An Orange Alert is raised when there is a high possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall, which normally forecasts rain from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours. This warning stage indicates:
There is an increased risk of flooding in streets, streams, and vulnerable areas.
Citizens should be prepared for potential disruptions to road, rail, and air travel.
Power supply interruptions are also expected.
The Orange Alert currently given for the Pudukkottai, Thiruvarur, and Mayiladuthurai districts represents the highest immediate risk for the current forecast.
Yellow Alert (Be Aware)
The Yellow Alert is the least serious of the significant alerts. It indicates that the weather could be adverse and may deteriorate. It usually warns of heavy rain, typically between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours. The meaning is:
It is important that citizens are aware of the possibility of extremely bad weather disrupting daily life. Isolated flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
The weather can interfere with outdoor preparations; therefore, people are advised to be aware of the forecast. Currently, places like Thoothukudi, Madurai, Nilgiris, and Sivagangai are under Yellow Alert.
The IMD warned that the districts that are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall due to the low-pressure system include Villupuram, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur. Authorities are urging residents in those districts to follow official advisories and take all necessary safety precautions.
