Orange Alert Issued For Mumbai (Representative Image)
The weather agency India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for heavy rain in Mumbai, Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Latur, and Nanded districts of Maharashtra over the next 24 hours.
Speaking to ANI, chief of IMD Maharashtra Sunil Kamble said, ‘We have issued an Orange alert for heavy rain in Mumbai, Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Latur, and Nanded for the next 24 hours. Today, Mumbai received more than 65 mm of rainfall.’
For those unversed, weather department issues yellow alert when rainfall is predicted between 64.5 mm and 115. 5 mm. While the rainfall between 115.6 to 204.4 mm comes under orange alert.
But Red alert is issued when the region is expected to receive 204.5 mm of rainfall within a span of 24 hours.
Earlier, Mumbai experienced intense rainfall on Sunday night, which resulted in significant waterlogging across various areas.
Moreover, IMD recorded favorable conditions for southwest monsoon to advance over central Arabian Sea, some parts of Maharashtra (including Mumbai), and Telangana for the next 2-3 days.
Overall, this year monsoon has arrived two early, as usually the date of monsoon onset is on June 1.
