The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh warnings for several states as the monsoon remains active across India this Sunday. While Delhi and other areas expect comparatively mild weather, other areas are braced for severe rainfall and even flooding.

What’s the weather in Delhi today?

While large parts of India are dealing with heavy rain, Delhi’s Sunday forecast looks comparatively calmer. The sky will be partly cloudy, with the possibility of light rain or thundershowers in certain places, mostly at night or in the evening. The temperature ranges from a high of about 32°C during the day to a low of 26°C at night. Though high levels of humnidity is expected, peaking near 88%, making conditions sticky.

Where Will Heavy Rainfall Hit India?

Very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall:

  • West and East Rajasthan
  • Gujarat State (isolated pockets at risk of extreme downpour)
  • Konkan & Goa
  • Madhya Maharashtra

Heavy rainfall likely in:

  • Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya
  • Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura
  • Odisha
  • Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim
  • Tamil Nadu

These warnings also come with flash flood alerts for East and West Rajasthan and the Gujarat region, where local watersheds face moderate to high risk.

Thunderstorms and Coastal Warnings

The IMD has also flagged thunderstorms with gusty winds and lightning in several states. Coastal areas are under extra caution:

  • Coastal Andhra Pradesh & South Interior Karnataka: Strong surface winds expected.
  • The Arabian Sea and the Gujarat coast are vulnerable to squally weather, making fishing dangerous.
  • Residents and visitors are advised to use caution in these areas as unforeseen thunderstorms may cause delays.

Why Is the Monsoon Still Active in September?

September generally marks the beginning of the retreating monsoon, but conditions this year are unusual.

  • Persistent moisture inflow from both the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
  • Cyclonic circulations sustaining heavy rainfall pockets.
  • Delayed withdrawal patterns, which extend the rainy season in parts of India.

This is why there is still a risk of flooding and severe rainfall in some states even in early September. Although Delhi won’t face the same flood risks as Rajasthan or Gujarat, the combination of high humidity and evening rain may make the weather uncomfortable for residents.

Note: The weather prediction is based on IMD forecast.
