The India Meteorological Department has issued fresh alerts following the continued development of two active weather systems in the Indian Ocean, one of which is likely to strengthen into a cyclonic storm named ‘Senyar’ on November 26. These systems are expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to parts of southern India along with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
A deep depression over the Strait of Malacca and a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal, extending into areas near South Sri Lanka and is likely to make landfall in the afternoon in the Indonesia coast, according to the India Meteorological Department
Deep Depression over Strait of Malacca
A deep depression has formed over the Strait of Malacca, a major maritime passage that connects the Indian and Pacific Oceans. This system is currently the biggest concern for weather authorities. The latest update from IMD states that the depression is most likely to move west-northwestward and intensify into a cyclonic storm by forenoon November 26.
Cyclone Named Senyar
If it becomes a cyclone, the storm will be named ‘Senyar’, the name given by the United Arab Emirates. As this system intensifies, gusty winds of 60 kmph to 100 kmph are likely to affect the affected areas through Wednesday.
Alerts for Heavy Rainfall over Islands and Southern States
Both systems are contributing to weather conditions across the region, thus producing significant rain warnings. The islands are most likely to receive light to moderate rainfall interspersed with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations on November 26 and November 27. The intensity is expected to reduce gradually from November 28 onwards.
Additionally, a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal may also intensify into a depression, bringing more rain over southern India. Rainfall Warnings: Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued in parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala for Wednesday and Thursday. Severe waterlogging has been reported in many coastal areas in the past week already, including the Tuticorin district in Tamil Nadu.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely to occur in Tamil Nadu from November 26 to November 29 and at Kerala and Mahe on November 26 and November 27.
Tamil Nadu School and College Closure Updates
Continuous heavy rain earlier this week has already disrupted daily life in several coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. An announcement is awaited from the authorities if educational institutions will remain closed on Wednesday, November 26.
