Amid ongoing concerns over wolf attacks in Bahraich, villagers in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district are now in panic after a pack of hyenas killed 26 sheep and carried off 10 lambs. The incident took place at a sheep enclosure in a village near a forested area on Saturday night. In addition to the dead sheep, four were critically injured, and two of the missing lambs were later found dead in the nearby forest.
The attack has raised serious safety concerns in Paatanpur village. Forest officials visited the site on Sunday, confirming the involvement of hyenas based on footprints found in the area. Senior police officers and the district magistrate also inspected the scene, with authorities promising measures to safeguard the villagers.
The village, located near the Kamhariya dam and surrounded by dense forests, lacks security for the farm where the attack occurred. Ramnarayan Pal, the farm owner, has 60 to 70 sheep, which are looked after by his sons, Jaiveer and Shivveer. On the night of the attack, one brother was asleep while the other kept watch. At around 3 a.m., the hyenas struck, leaving a trail of carcasses both inside and outside the enclosure.
Authorities continue to search for the missing lambs, while forest and police officials investigate the incident. Senior officials, including the divisional commissioner, DIG, and DM, have visited the site and assured villagers that steps will be taken to prevent future attacks.
