In a major push to transform Hyderabad’s urban mobility landscape, the Telangana government has initiated a coordinated plan to integrate the city’s MMTS suburban rail, Metro Rail and city bus services. The initiative aims to strengthen first- and last-mile connectivity, ease commuter movement and encourage greater reliance on public transport over private vehicles. Special Chief Secretary for Transport, Roads & Buildings (T, R&B), Vikas Raj, IAS, said the initiative marks a decisive shift toward creating a seamless multimodal transportation network for the city. He was speaking after chairing a high-level inter-agency meeting at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Telangana Secretariat. “Hyderabad’s mobility future depends on better coordination between rail, metro and buses. Our priority is smoother transfers, safer access roads and reliable feeder connectivity so commuters are less dependent on private vehicles,” Raj said. As part of the plan, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will undertake infrastructure upgrades around 51 MMTS stations. This includes improving approach roads, widening key stretches and relocating utilities to enhance accessibility and ensure pedestrian safety. South Central Railway will share data on high-footfall MMTS stations and major commuter catchment zones with GHMC and the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC). Based on this data, TGSRTC will reposition or relocate bus stops closer to MMTS stations and reroute services to serve nearby residential and commercial hubs more efficiently. The government is also exploring the introduction of private feeder services such as shared shuttles or vans to connect MMTS stations with surrounding neighbourhoods. These services, if implemented, will operate within designated zones and be monitored through GPS tracking to ensure reliability and regulation. Further, TGSRTC and GHMC have been directed to map the nearest bus stops and routes for every MMTS station, creating a station-wise connectivity blueprint to streamline commuter transfers. Officials also agreed to improve alignment between Hyderabad Metro stations and nearby bus stops to prevent unsafe pedestrian movement onto busy roads. In another significant step, Raj said the Commissioner of MeeSeva has been asked to examine the feasibility of introducing an integrated ticketing system for Metro Rail, MMTS and TGSRTC buses, potentially allowing commuters to travel across all modes using a single pass.
