A 27-year-old cab driver in Hyderabad has been arrested for brutally killing his pregnant wife and cutting her body into pieces. The incident took place on Saturday at their home in Medipally, located in the Hyderabad metropolitan area.
Police said the accused, identified as Mahender Reddy, strangled and smothered his wife, Swathi, also known as Jyothi. After killing her, he used a blade to sever her head, hands, and legs. He then packed the body parts in small plastic bags and disposed of them in the Musi River.
According to officials, Mahender made three trips to the river to throw away the bags. However, he kept the torso of the woman hidden in his room.
DCP (Malkajgiri zone) PV Padmaja confirmed that the dismembered body was recovered and sent for post-mortem. A DNA test will also be conducted for further investigation.
The murder is believed to have happened around 4.30 pm on Saturday. Initially, Mahender went to the police and filed a missing complaint about his wife. But during questioning, he confessed to the crime.

“During questioning, he confessed to the brutal killing of his wife the previous day,” DCP Padmaja Reddy told PTI.
Police secured the crime scene, collected evidence, and later sent Mahender to judicial remand.
Some reports suggest that Mahender confessed to a relative, who then alerted the police. Other reports claim that Mahender called his sister to say his wife was missing. His sister grew suspicious and informed a relative, who then accompanied Mahender to the police station.
This helped the police uncover the truth behind the missing complaint.
Investigations revealed that the victim had filed a domestic violence case against her husband in April 2024 in Vikarabad. The case, however, was settled after elders in their village intervened and made the couple reconcile.

Swathi and Mahender were childhood neighbours in Vikarabad. Their love affair turned into an arranged marriage in January 2024. Soon after marriage, they shifted to a rented house in Hyderabad’s Boduppal.
After about a month of marriage, frequent quarrels began between the couple. Police sources said Mahender often doubted Swathi’s character and even forced her to leave her job at a call centre.
Swathi was conceived in March this year. On August 22, she told her husband that she wanted to visit her parents in Vikarabad for a medical check-up and stay there for some time. This triggered a heated argument.
Police believe that after this fight, Mahender decided to kill his wife.
