A shocking email from a senior Indian Air Force officer has helped expose self-styled godman Swami Chaitanyananda Saraswati. He faces charges of sexually harassing more than 17 students at a management institute in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj. Police have booked him and three women staff members for their alleged role in the abuse.

Complaints Sparked by Student Letter & IAF Email

The scandal came to light after a former student wrote to the institute on July 28, alleging molestation and sexual harassment by Swami Saraswati. The administration received the letter on July 31. Just two days later, on August 1, a Group Captain in the Indian Air Force sent an email to the institute.

The officer said they had received complaints from students about Saraswati’s behaviour. The email highlighted arbitrary actions, vindictive behaviour, and WhatsApp messages sent to girl students at odd hours.

“On August 1, an email was received from an Officer of the rank of Group Captain… informing that they received various complaints and representations from students alleging various arbitrary decisions and vindictive behaviour towards the students by Swami Chaitanyananda Saraswati, including sending WhatsApp messages to girl students at odd hours,” the institute said in a statement.

Following these alerts, the governing council held a virtual meeting with more than 30 women students on August 3.

Three Women Staff Members Also Accused

The FIR also named three women staff members, including an associate dean. They allegedly pressured students to give in to Saraswati’s advances and ignored complaints.

Most students at the institute come from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) or are children of armed forces officials.

Police Investigations Reveal More Shocking Details

Police have registered two cases against Saraswati. One is for sexual harassment, and another for using a forged diplomatic number plate on a Volvo car found in the institute’s basement. The number plate read 39 UN 1.

Deputy commissioner of police (southwest) Amit Goel confirmed the cases. “We have registered two different cases on August 25 — one for sexual harassment and another for the forged number plate. Our teams are searching for him, and we are connecting all the important leads,” he said.

During the inquiry, statements of 32 women PGDM students were recorded. Seventeen confirmed that Saraswati abused them, sent obscene messages, and made unwanted physical advances. They also recorded their statements before a magistrate.

Repeat Offender with High-Profile Connections

This is not the first time Swami Saraswati has faced such charges. Police earlier booked him for fraud and molestation in 2009 and for another molestation case in 2016. Despite his history, Swami Saraswati continued to head the institute, write books, and gain recognition from prominent personalities.

He has authored 28 books described as works of a “professor, author, orator, educationist, and philanthropist.” The Sri Sharada Peetham in Sringeri, Karnataka, with which the institute is affiliated, has now distanced itself from him.
