Hmar Inpui endorses UNC rally, urges swift tribal resolutions

Hmar Inpui, the paramount tribal body representing the Hmar community in Manipur, declared its solidarity with the United Naga Council’s (UNC) rally. The rally, scheduled for August 9, 2023, is set to span across all Naga-inhabited regions in the state.
In an official communique, Hmar Inpui urged the Central government to hasten the negotiations that address the longstanding demands of the tribal communities, which primarily revolve around establishing a distinct administration for the Kuki, Hmar, and Zomi tribes.
Amidst allegations of the predominant Meitei community, supposedly backed by local governance, engaging in “ethnic cleansing” against the Kuki, Hmar, and Zomi, Hmar Inpui has thrown its weight behind the UNC’s mass demonstration.
The statement read, “The Hmar Inpui beseeches the Government of India to act judiciously, thereby accelerating the process of reconciling the demands of the tribal communities for a separate Kuki/Hmar/Zomi administrative body. This is in line with the framework agreement for the Nagas, aiming to establish enduring peace in the conflict-ridden state of Manipur.”
The tribal body further expressed its grievances against consecutive Manipur governments, accusing them of infringing on the constitutionally protected rights of the tribal communities.
