In an interview with ‘Historically Speaking’, senior journalist Pankaj Vohra revealed an interesting anecdote to Dr. Aishwarya Pandit Sharma about how former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi needed somebody to coin a slogan.
The slogan ‘Wo Kehte Hai Indira Hatao Mein Kehti Hu Garibi Hatao’ was given by the former PM but was coined by a lecturer from Delhi University in Delhi College.
Vohra said, “Indira Ji needed somebody to coin, there used to be this time, lecturer in Delhi University in Delhi College. His name was Ashok Chatterjee. He later became Metropolitan council member from Goal Market. Ashok Chatterjee coined the slogan – ‘Wo Kehte Hai Indira Hatao Mein Kehti Hu Gareebi Hatao’. So, that slogan of ‘Gareebi Hatao’ came into existence. It was a slogan given by Indira Gandhi but which was coined by Ashok Chatterjee. Very few people know.”
