Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today took oath as Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term after the BJP-led NDA secured a third straight victory in the state Assembly elections.

Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma and four senior leaders at a large public ceremony held at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Guwahati. More than one lakh people attended the event, which also saw the presence of several top national and regional leaders.

The swearing-in followed the NDA’s strong performance in the April 2026 Assam Assembly elections. The alliance won 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly, while the BJP alone secured 82 seats, improving its tally from the 2021 elections. The result gave the alliance a three-fourths majority and marked the first time a non-Congress government in Assam returned for two consecutive full terms.

Sarma, who retained his Jalukbari seat, has emerged as the central face of the BJP’s political rise in Assam and the Northeast.

Along with Sarma, four ministers took oath, representing both BJP leaders and alliance partners.

Ajanta Neog, a six-time MLA from Golaghat and Assam’s longest-serving woman legislator since 2001, was included in the cabinet. Her experience in women’s issues, tea tribe welfare and grassroots governance is seen as important for the government.

Rameswar Teli was also sworn in, strengthening the BJP’s organisational and administrative setup.

Atul Bora represented the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), keeping the regional ally’s role intact in the coalition, especially in Upper Assam and among indigenous communities.

Charan Boro from the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) joined the ministry, reinforcing the NDA’s outreach to Bodo and tribal communities.

The five-member lineup is expected to expand later into a full Council of Ministers with representation from different regions and communities.

The swearing-in ceremony saw the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who attended the event in Guwahati along with several senior NDA leaders.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, BJP National President Nitin Nabin and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal were among the prominent leaders present.

More than 40 NDA Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers also attended the event, including Devendra Fadnavis and Bhajan Lal Sharma.

Congress leaders, including Gaurav Gogoi, did not attend the ceremony.

Despite the massive mandate, the new government faces several challenges. Floods, unemployment among youth, ethnic demands in hill and tribal regions and balanced development across Assam remain major concerns.

The government will also have to manage coalition dynamics while delivering quickly on election promises.

Still, today’s ceremony reflected the NDA’s strong political position in Assam and the Northeast. With another term in office and strong backing from the central leadership, Sarma begins his second innings with significant political strength.
