Heatwave Havoc: India Records Nearly 143 Deaths, Over 41,000 Heatstroke Cases

The scorching heatwave, primarily affecting northern India, has led to around 143 deaths nationwide, according to health ministry sources cited by news agency PTI on Friday. However, the actual toll may surpass this figure, with over 41,000 reported heatstroke cases. Acting on directives from Union Health Minister JP Nadda, the ministry has issued an advisory to state health departments concerning the ‘Heatwave Season 2024′.

“The country may experience above-normal seasonal maximum temperatures. To reduce health impacts, health departments must ensure preparedness and a timely response,” the ministry stated.

Between March 1 and June 20, 143 deaths attributed to heatwaves and 41,789 cases of heatstroke have been reported across India. However, experts believe the actual toll may be higher due to incomplete data submissions.

In Delhi alone, the death toll from the summer heat reached at least 53 by Thursday. Despite reported figures, it’s estimated that temperatures in Delhi may have caused nearly 100 more deaths.

Health Minister JP Nadda directed officials to assess hospitals’ readiness during the ongoing heatwave conditions, emphasizing optimal healthcare provision to affected individuals.

The ‘Heatwave Season 2024’ advisory emphasized prompt data submissions, maintenance of digital records, early warnings dissemination, and health facility preparedness to manage severe heat-related illnesses.
