Haryana’s bid for Punjab University Affiliation sparks concerns amidst PU’s struggles

The issue of re-affiliation of colleges from three districts in Haryana – Ambala, Yamuna Nagar, and Kurukshetra – with Punjab University has been a recurring topic for the past few months. The government is determined to achieve this goal, asserting that it would provide students from these colleges an opportunity to study under the prestigious PU banner. However, this move faces resistance from teachers, the university’s senate body, and other stakeholders, who oppose the Haryana government’s demand for affiliation.
Adding to the complexity, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has declined to share with Haryana. Punjab fears that granting this request could weaken its claim to Chandigarh as its capital. Additionally, Panjab University itself is grappling with various challenges, including financial constraints and a severe shortage of teaching staff. Students and teachers have previously staged protests on multiple issues, and a recent visit by the NAAC team highlighted concerns about several departmental practices. The teachers emphasize that the university’s economic struggles necessitate a comprehensive strategy for resolution. They have been at odds with both the Punjab government and the Government of India (GOI) regarding their pending arrears for the past seven years. Despite the announcement of 7th Pay Commission benefits several months ago, no progress has been made in this regard.
