‘Hang Him Or Whatever…’: Mother In Law Of Accused In Kolkata Rape Murder Case

As the investigation and protests continue in the wake of the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, Durga Devi, the mother-in-law of the accused Sanjay Roy, has suggested that more individuals might be involved in the crime. She expressed doubt that Roy could have acted alone in committing the heinous act.

Speaking to ANI on Monday, Durga Devi recounted the troubled relationship between her daughter and Sanjay Roy. She described the marriage as strained and revealed that Roy had physically abused her daughter, which led to a police complaint being filed.

“Our relationship with him was very tense,” Durga Devi stated. “Initially, everything was fine for about six months. But when she was three months pregnant, he caused her to have a miscarriage. He beat her, and we filed a police complaint. After that, my daughter’s health deteriorated, and I had to bear all her medical expenses.”

She further remarked, “Sanjay was not a good person. Whether he is hanged or whatever is done to him, I won’t comment on the crime itself. But I don’t believe he could have done it alone. He can’t do it alone.”

The rape and murder of the trainee doctor have triggered widespread outrage and protests across various cities, with demands for justice and strict punishment for those involved. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, and a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is scheduled to hear it today.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is leading the probe, has been granted permission to conduct a polygraph test on the accused, according to CBI sources.

On August 18, the CBI team conducted an examination and 3D laser mapping in the emergency ward of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the crime took place.

In a parallel investigation, the West Bengal government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate allegations of financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital from January 2021 to the present. According to a notification from the Home and Hill Affairs Department, the SIT will have access to all relevant documents from government departments and private agencies to expedite the investigation. The team is expected to submit its initial report within a month.

The SIT will be led by IG Pranav Kumar, with assistance from Murshidabad Range DIG Waquar Reza, West Bengal CID DIG Soma Das Mitra, and Kolkata (Central) DC Indira Mukherjee.

The postgraduate trainee doctor was tragically found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, sparking the ongoing investigation and public outcry.
