H3N2 Virus Surge: Symptoms You Can’t Ignore And What’s Fuelling The Spread

Delhi hospitals are witnessing a sudden surge in flu-like infections characterized by acute fever, throat pain, body pain, and exhaustion. Unlike the season flu, these symptoms are not subsiding with usual over-the-counter drugs, causing concern among patients as well as physicians.

Symptoms That Persist Longer Than Usual

Physicians explain that the ongoing outbreak is caused by the H3N2 influenza A virus, a subtype that produces more serious and longer-lasting symptoms than ordinary flu. Healing takes more than one week, and complications like chest congestion or pneumonia force hospitalization in some cases.

Dr Vikas Maurya, Fortis Hospital’s Senior Director of Respiratory Medicine, said this year’s prolonged monsoon season has been one of the factors that contributed to making the virus more infectious. He said that even though seasonal flu is a category of respiratory infections, H3N2 in particular is sweeping this wave.

Patients are reporting longer duration of cough, fatigue, and low-grade fever, said Dr Vikas Mittal, Pulmonologist at Wellness Home Clinic. “Whereas an average cold subsides in a week, H3N2-associated infections may extend to two weeks,” he added.

Why the Virus is Spreading Fast

Medical professionals point the speed of its spread not only to weather but also to lifestyle. Low immunity because of poor sleeping habits, lack of proper nutrition, and high levels of pollution are making individuals more vulnerable. Children are especially at risk since their immune systems are developing and proximity in schools is increasing the rate at which the infection is spreading.

Physicians caution that children typically come with cough, fever, nasal congestion, and wheezing at times. In the advanced stage, untreated infection can cause bronchitis or ear infection.

When to Seek Medical Help

Though mild colds get better with rest, physicians recommend medical consultation if the fever lasts longer than three days, if the cough gets worse, or if breathing becomes hard. “Self-medication and procrastination in taking rest can extend the illness,” warned Dr Prashant Sinha of PSRI Hospital.

Experts emphasize the need for hydration, rest, and early treatment. In children, parents are advised to keep a close watch on signs, particularly if the child has asthma or other respiratory diseases.

Since over half of OPD hospital cases present with high-grade fever and congestion, health workers are advising people not to underestimate symptoms and ignore initial warning signs.
