US President Donald Trump on Friday announced that his “great friend” Sergio Gor will serve as the next United States Ambassador to India and also take on the role of Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. The move comes as Washington strengthens its outreach in one of the world’s most dynamic regions.

Who is Sergio Gor?

Many people consider Gor, who is currently the Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, to be one of the most important people in the Trump administration.  According to Trump, Gor and his team were instrumental in hiring nearly 4,000 “America First Patriots” across government departments, achieving a 95% staffing level.

A long-time loyalist, Gor has played multiple roles in Trump’s journey—working on his presidential campaigns, publishing his best-selling books, and running a major Super PAC backing the Trump movement.

Trump’s Praise for Gor

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote:

“I am promoting Sergio Gor to be our next United States Ambassador to the Republic of India, and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs… Sergio will remain in his current role at the White House until his confirmation.”

The President added that Gor had been a “great friend”, noting his loyalty and deep involvement in shaping the Trump presidency.

Succeeding Eric Garcetti

If confirmed, Gor will succeed Eric Garcetti, who took office in March 2023. Trump emphasized that for a region as significant as South and Central Asia, he wanted someone he could “fully trust” to carry forward his agenda and strengthen bilateral ties with India.

Strategic Implications

The appointment comes at a time when US-India relations are growing across defense, technology, and trade sectors. Trump intends to directly direct relations with India and the larger Asian area, as seen by his choice to designate a close confidant.
