The start of the Monsoon Session of Parliament was tense as the government and the Opposition INDIA alliance clashed over requests for talks on important topics such as India’s foreign policy, the Pahalgam terror attack, and “Operation Sindoor.” There have been intense discussions and disturbances in both Houses as a result of the Opposition uniting on eight major issues following a virtual gathering of 24 parties to oppose the ruling BJP-led NDA.
“Non-Negotiable” Debate on Pahalgam Operation
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and the INDIA bloc have insisted on dedicating two full days to this topic, along with discussions on the Pahalgam terror attack, claims by US President Trump, and China’s role—branding these demands as “non-negotiable.”

Ramesh emphasized that statements from high-ranking defence officials—CDS General Chauhan, Group Captain Shivkumar, and Lt. Gen. Rahul Singh—highlight pressing issues around Operation Sindoor, necessitating a detailed parliamentary probe.
INDIA Bloc’s 8-Point Agenda for Parliament
On Saturday, the INDIA alliance held a virtual meeting attended by top leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi (Congress), Sharad Pawar (NCP-SP), Uddhav Thackeray (Shiv Sena-UBT), Tejashwi Yadav (RJD), and Omar Abdullah (NC). The bloc finalized eight key issues to raise in Parliament:
- The Pahalgam terror attack (April 22), where 25 tourists and a local were killed.
- Operation Sindoor, the military operation against terror camps in Pakistan.
- The ceasefire announcement by former US President Donald Trump and its implications.
- The foreign policy of India in the face of changing global conditions.
- The Election Commission is updating the electoral lists in Bihar.
- Alleged misuse of central agencies.
- Rising inflation and unemployment.
- Farmers’ issues and MSP guarantees.
Govt Dismisses Allegations, Calls for Proof
The BJP countered, labeling the demands as “politically motivated.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh asserted that “national security operations cannot be discussed in the open.” Home Minister Amit Shah added that law enforcement is already probing any illegal conversions.
Parliament Sees Disruptions, Adjournments
As both sides refused to yield, proceedings in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned briefly amid protests. Speaker Om Birla and Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar urged members to maintain decorum.
Broader Debate on Anti-Conversion Laws Looms
Sources indicate the discussion could expand to anti-conversion laws, with BJP-ruled states advocating stricter measures. Opposition parties, however, argue these laws are being misused to target minorities.
