Former Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh, is no more. He left for heaven at the age of 92 late on Thursday night at AIIMS Delhi. One of India’s finest economists with a strong symbol of humility and wisdom, Dr Manmohan Singh succumbed to death after battling health problems for sometime. The doctors at the hospital confirmed death at 9: 51 pm after a sudden loss of consciousness earlier that evening.
A Storied Legacy
Born in 1932 in Punjab, Dr Manmohan Singh was groomed from humble beginnings into becoming a respected economist and statesman the world over. He was the prime minister of India for two consecutive terms between 2004 and 2014 and left an indelible mark on the country‘s economic and political landscape. His career began as an economic advisor in the Commerce Ministry in 1971, and he retired from the Rajya Sabha this year after 33 years of service.
Nation and World Leaders Pay Tribute
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Dr. Singh as one of India‘s most distinguished leaders, remembering the pivotal role he played in shaping India‘s economic reforms. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed deep sorrow, saying he was a “mentor and guide.” President Droupadi Murmu paid tribute to Singh‘s life, acknowledging his unblemished political life and humility.
Industrialists like Gautam Adani and Harsh Goenka also remembered Singh for the change he brought to India during the 1991 reforms. Internationally, Afghanistan’s former President Hamid Karzai and Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed remembered him as a benevolent figure and an ardent friend.
National Mourning Declared
The Union government has declared a seven-day national mourning to honour the former prime minister. During this period, the National Flag will fly at half-mast, and all official entertainment is suspended. Congress has also cancelled all party events, including its foundation day celebrations, to mark this solemn occasion.
