Ghatshila By Election Voter Turnout

Preliminary reports indicate that voter participation was strong: turnout was approximately 73·88% of electors.

The electorate count stands at about 2.55 lakh, and polling stations were expanded to 300 ahead of the election.

Why is Ghatshila famous?

Ghatshila is an ST reserved seat with a sizeable tribal population, and surrounded by industrial and mining zones, too, which makes the voter sentiment complex.

The seat has turned into a prestige test for Hemant Soren’s JMM government. A win here is seen as a reaffirmation of JMM’s tribal appeal.

The vacancy was caused by the death of Ramdas Soren, adding an emotional dimension and a legacy factor to the contest.

Ghatshila Election Winner 2024

In the 2024 assembly election, the winner of the Ghatshila Assembly Constituency is Ramdas Soren of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) who won with ~52,410 votes (~51.2%). He defeated his nearest rival, Babu Lal Soren (BJP), who secured ~46,380 votes (~45.3%).

Ghatshila Election Winner 2019

JMM’s Ramdas Soren won the seat in the 2019 Jharkhand Legislative Assembly election, fetching ~ 48,750 votes (~50.8%), thus defeating BJP’s Babu Lal Soren, who got ~44,100 votes (~45.9%).

Ramdas Soren was a senior JMM leader and Jharkhand’s Education Minister. His victories marked the party’s strong tribal influence in Ghatshila.

Ghatshila’s by-election was necessitated after the sitting MLA, Ramdas Soren of the JMM, died on 15 August 2025. As of now, that vacancy has pitched a high-stakes battle — as a test of strength and credibility in a key tribal constituency.
