Ghatshila (ST) Assembly constituency is a Scheduled-Tribe reserved seat, and forms part of the larger Jamshedpur Lok Sabha constituency. It is located in East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.
This seat fell vacant following the death of the sitting MLA, a reason for a by-poll in 2025. Considering its large tribal voter base, along with its historic voting trend, the Ghatshila by-election is all set to be a major political barometer.
The by-election for Ghatshila will be held on 11 November 2025, and the result will be declared on 14 November 2025.
In the last full assembly election in 2024, Ram Das Soren of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) won the seat of Ghatshila. His victory reaffirmed the party's hold on this tribal-dominated constituency.
Ramdas Soren was born on January 14, 1912, in the Kharsawan Sub-Division of Seraikella-Kharsawan District.
A senior Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader and two-time MLA from the Ghatshila (ST) Assembly constituency in East Singhbhum district, Ramdas Soren was an admired tribal representative. He was the Minister of School Education and Literacy in the Hemant Soren government of Jharkhand.
As a native of Ghorabandha village, Soren was known for his connection to the grassroots and efforts toward education and welfare improvement in tribal-dominated regions. His sudden death in August 2025 resulted in the current by-poll in Ghatshila, marking the end of a significant chapter in Jharkhand's tribal politics.
The Ghatshila seat was previously represented by Ramdas Soren of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha(JMM), who won the constituency in the 2024 Assembly elections. His passing earlier this year necessitated the 2025 bypoll, which is now being seen as a test of JMM’s continued hold over tribal regions in East Singhbhum.
