Today, September 6, 2025, marks the grand celebration of Ganesh Visarjan, the concluding ritual of the ten-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival, observed with great devotion across Maharashtra and various other parts of India. On this special day, devotees immerse Lord Ganesha’s idol in water bodies, accompanied by music, chants, and processions, as a way of bidding farewell to the deity. The immersion ceremony symbolizes the cycle of creation and dissolution and is an important spiritual event for millions of followers.
Despite the grand celebrations, not all institutions observe a holiday. Banks remain open in most parts of India today, though closures vary based on the state. According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) state-wise holiday calendar, banks will be closed in Gangtok, Sikkim’s capital, today to observe Eid-e-Milad (Milad-Un-Nabi) and Indrajatra. Eid-e-Milad celebrates the birth of Prophet Muhammad, while Indrajatra marks the end of the harvest season, particularly observed in the Kathmandu valley and Sikkim. Customers planning to visit banks are advised to check the RBI holiday list in advance to avoid inconvenience.
The RBI’s holiday calendar is issued in line with the Negotiable Instruments Act, ensuring regulated banking transactions, especially involving cheques and promissory notes, remain halted on designated holidays.
Ganesh Visarjan is the culmination of the festival that begins with Ganesh Chaturthi in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. Today, thousands of devotees gather to perform the ritual of immersing Lord Ganesha’s idol in rivers, seas, or lakes. This act is carried out with immense enthusiasm, prayers, and chants of "Ganpati Bappa Morya, Agle Baras Tu Jaldi Aana!" expressing hope for the deity’s return the following year. The immersion is considered auspicious, provided it is done during specific muhurats (auspicious time slots), believed to bring prosperity, peace, and happiness to the devotees.
According to the official panchang, multiple favorable time slots were set for Visarjan, with one key slot between 12:19 PM and 5:02 PM. These muhurats are chosen carefully based on astrological calculations, emphasizing the importance of timing in religious rituals.
The next national bank holiday will fall on Sunday, September 7, 2025, followed by a state-specific holiday in Mumbai on Monday, September 8, due to the Eid-e-Milad procession being rescheduled from September 5 to September 8 by local Muslim authorities.
Other notable bank holidays in September 2025 include:
September 12: Jammu and Srinagar observe a holiday after Eid-e-Milad.
September 22: Jaipur banks remain closed for Navratra Sthapna.
September 23: Jammu and Srinagar observe the Birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji.
September 29 and 30: Durga Puja celebrations in regions like Agartala, Kolkata, and Gangtok result in bank closures.
Banks are typically closed on all Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, along with state-specific religious or regional holidays.
Even when banks remain closed, customers can manage financial transactions conveniently. Online and mobile banking services remain active, allowing users to transfer funds, pay bills, and check balances. ATMs function as usual, providing cash withdrawal services. Additionally, digital payment systems like UPI and respective bank apps enable hassle-free transactions, ensuring no disruption to routine banking needs.
