The Union government has significantly stepped up spending on internal security, policing and intelligence in 2026–27, with higher allocations for police forces, intelligence agencies, border management and data-driven security systems, signalling a continued push to modernise India’s internal security architecture.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has been allocated Rs 10,387.35 crore for 2026–27, a sharp increase from the revised estimate of Rs 7,480.15 crore in the previous year. The rise is driven by higher provisioning for disaster response, census operations, internal administration and security-linked infrastructure.
One of the largest increases within the Home Ministry is in spending on Census, Survey and Statistics, including preparations for Census 2027. The allocation rises to Rs 6,000 crore, compared with Rs 1,040 crore in the revised estimate for 2025–26. Expenditure on the National Disaster Response Force has also increased to Rs 2,002.14 crore, alongside continued funding for disaster management infrastructure and emergency helicopter services in sensitive and border regions.
At the core of internal security spending is police expenditure, where total allocations rise to Rs 1,73,802.53 crore in 2026–27, up from Rs 1,62,283.39 crore in the previous year. The increase covers the Central Armed Police Forces, intelligence agencies, border infrastructure, police modernisation and forensic capacity building.
Allocations for the Central Armed Police Forces rise to Rs 1,16,789.30 crore, covering the CRPF, BSF, ITBP, CISF, Assam Rifles, SSB and the National Security Guard. Spending on police infrastructure also increases sharply, with Rs 5,266.51 crore provided for border infrastructure and management, including fencing, roads, surveillance systems and border outposts, and Rs 5,393.37 crore for police buildings and housing projects.
Intelligence agencies see one of the clearest increases. The Intelligence Bureau has been allocated Rs 6,782.43 crore in 2026–27, up from a revised estimate of Rs 4,159.11 crore in the previous year.
