From Mumbai to Konkan Travel Gets a Boost: Ro-Ro Ferry Set to Launch Sept 1

Mumbai–Konkan Ro-Ro ferry to cut travel time in half, offering faster journeys, vehicle transport and boosting tourism from Sept 1.

Ro-Ro ferry service from Mumbai to Konkan will finally commence as expected From September 1. The ferry provides a faster mode of traveling to reduce the Mumbai-Jaigad, Ratnagiri journey to only 3-4 hours as against the 7-8 hours by road. Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg will be covered in about 5-6 hours compared to the 10-12 hours it took to travel by road.

A major boost in accessibility to Konkan

Maharashtra Ports Minister Nitesh Rane announced the launch, emphasizing how crucial this new link is. While existing connectors of the Konkan Railway and the Mumbai-Goa Highway indeed reduce distance, a water link which would ease the burden on the roads and provide an easy alternative journey for the locals and tourists.

Nitesh Rane, who inspected the ferry himself, was proud of the initiative saying that it will help boost transport between Konkan and Mumbai.

Ticket Prices and Facilities

The ferry service is to meet all kinds of travelers in its design. Four categories of seating are announced: Economy Class at ₹2,500, Premium Economy at ₹4,000, Business Class at ₹7,500, and First Class at ₹9,000, besides which the Ro-Ro model allows commuters to carry their vehicles for seamless onward journey. Car fare is set at ₹6,000, ₹1,000 for two-wheeler and ₹600 for bicycle. With a capacity to carry 50 cars and 30 two-wheelers at once, the ferry offers a great way of reducing the hassles involved in long road trips.

Next to the Mumbai-Mandwa (Alibaug) route, launched in March 2020, this is the second major Ro-Ro service in the state. The ferry quickly established itself with patrons, an indication of how strong the demand existed for sea-based connectivity. So will the Mumbai-Konkan route attract a fair share of traffic, especially during festivals and holidays. 

Future Expansion Plans 

The first phase will only link Jaigad to Vijaydurg, but the government has much bigger plans for the service with further extension. Other jetties along the Konkan coast are under consideration at Shrivardhan, Mandwa and other places. 

Earlier, monsoon conditions delayed service with improving weather conditions, a test run will be conducted before the official launch. A new launch begins from Bhau Cha Dhakka at 6:30 am. The ferry returns after a two-hour halt at Vijaydurg.

The Ro-Ro ferry service will be a milestone in the transport infrastructure of Maharashtra. It will not only be convenient but will also create new economic opportunities for the Konkan region by shortening travel times, diminishing the pressure of road traffic and increasing tourist traffic.
