A four-storey residential building collapsed in Northeast Delhi’s Welcome area early Saturday morning, trapping several people under the debris. The incident occurred around 7 am in Gali No. 5 of Janta Colony, near Idgah Road in Seelampur, prompting an immediate multi-agency rescue effort.

Delhi Fire Service (DFS) emergency teams, police, and disaster response forces are all engaged in the rescue process. Seven fire tenders have been stationed at the scene.

“We got a call about a building collapse at 7 am. Several teams are operational, including seven fire tenders. Further details are awaited,” a top police official informed news agency PTI.

The reason for the collapse remains to be determined, DFS chief Atul Garg says.

Eight Rescued So Far, Including Toddler

Rescuers have managed to rescue eight individuals so far from the debris. Among them are four men, three women, and a 14-month-old baby boy by the name of Ahmad. While the adults were taken to JPC Hospital, the toddler was admitted to GTB Hospital.

Locals say that ten members of one family lived in the collapsed house.

“We don’t know how many are trapped, but a family of 10 people stays there, and three have been rescued,” Asma, a resident, said.

She continued, “Approximately at 7 am, I was at home when I heard a loud bang, and there was dust everywhere. When I came downstairs, I saw that our neighbour’s house had collapsed.”

Morning Walkers Become First Responders

Several individuals out for morning walks moved swiftly to the area and started rescue operations even before emergency responders reached the location. Pictures posted by ANI depict residents clearing rubble and helping victims.

This is the second big building collapse in Delhi within months. Four were killed and 13 rescued when a similar building collapsed in Mustafabad in April. Then, officials had termed it a “pancake collapse” with very little hope of survival.

As the rescue effort continues, officials are working to determine if there are more trapped individuals and what caused the unexpected collapse.
