Tragedy Strikes as Four Indian Students Drown in Russia’s Volkhov River, One Rescued Safely”

The External Affairs Ministry confirmed on Friday that four students from Jalgaon district in Maharashtra, studying in a Russian university, tragically drowned in the Volkhov river. Fortunately, one student was rescued.

“Our Consulate in St. Petersburg is in constant communication with the university and local authorities, offering all possible assistance,” the ministry stated.

Local emergency services have recovered two bodies, while efforts are underway to repatriate the mortal remains with the consulate’s coordination.

The ministry extended condolences to the families, with search operations ongoing for the remaining missing students.

All five students hailed from Jalgaon district and were enrolled at Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University in Veliky Novgorod, Russia.

The tragic incident occurred on Thursday when four students drowned in the Volkhov river, with the fifth student receiving medical attention after a narrow escape.

The Indian embassy assured prompt arrangements for sending the bodies to their families and providing necessary care to the rescued student.

Jalgaon District Collector Ayush Prasad highlighted collaborative efforts with the Ministry of External Affairs, Russian embassy, and local authorities for support and coordination.

Medical assistance, including psychological support, is being provided to the survivor, who was studying medicine at Veliky Novgorod State University.

The Indian Consulate in St. Petersburg reiterated efforts to repatriate the mortal remains swiftly, extending condolences and support to the bereaved families.
