Former Chief Minister of Punjab Charanjit Singh Channi, who isn’t done getting himself into controversy, has been in the middle of a new row over statements reported to be derogatory for women. His comments have raised so much flak that the Punjab State Women Commission issued a notice against him.
Chairman Punjab Women Commission expressed concern at the fact that the same issue is repeated when women are targeted in public remarks. She demanded serious steps for immediate actions against Channi. Punjab DGP has been asked to call for a detailed probe through a formal letter.
The controversy broke out on social media with a video of Channi saying purported derogatory words about women while going around Gidderbaha, campaigning for the Congress candidate Amritha Warring. The words were allegedly spoken while he was addressing a rally in her support. The video quickly went viral, and anger and a demand for accountability followed.
The incident has further intensified scrutiny on Channi’s actions, with many questioning the appropriateness of his statements during a public campaign. The Women Commission has vowed to ensure that such remarks do not go unchecked, adding pressure on the authorities to act swiftly.
