Former Maldivian FM Denounces Derogatory Comments, Calls for De-escalation Amid Diplomatic Strain with India

Former Maldivian Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon has sharply criticized a series of racist and disparaging comments made by Maldivian politicians in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Maumoon condemned the offensive remarks and urged for a quick resolution to the situation.

Responding to questions about President Mohamed Muizzu’s unconventional choice of China for his first state visit instead of India, Maumoon emphasized that while it breaks tradition, it does not diminish the strong relationship with India. She condemned the racist comments, stressing that while freedom of expression is valued, certain language used is unacceptable, urging responsible discourse.

Reflecting on the historical ties between India and the Maldives, Maumoon acknowledged strong friendships but highlighted past disagreements. She called for the role of responsible citizens, politicians, and the media in de-escalating tensions and resolving differences.

Expressing gratitude for India’s assistance in various sectors, Maumoon highlighted the special nature of the relationship and appealed to both governments to collaborate in de-escalating tensions and reaffirming the strong friendship. She labeled the recent controversial statements by Maldivian ministers as “unacceptable” and stressed the need for prevention and respectful language in diplomatic discourse.

Maumoon expressed hope for continued collaboration, emphasizing that friends may not always agree on everything but can discuss difficult issues. She underscored India’s historical support during crises, highlighting the resilience and strength of the enduring India-Maldives friendship.
