Former Army Chief Gen Ved Prakash Malik Highlights Enhanced Defense Capabilities Since Kargil War

Kashmir: During a press briefing at the Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations, General Ved Prakash Malik (Retd.), who led the Indian Army during the 1999 Kargil War, underscored the substantial advancements in India’s defense capabilities over the past 25 years.

General Malik highlighted that the country has made remarkable strides in areas such as surveillance technology, weaponry, and overall military infrastructure. These improvements have significantly bolstered India’s readiness and ability to respond to threats along its borders.

Enhanced Surveillance Technology

According to General Malik, one of the most critical areas of improvement has been in surveillance technology. The former Chief of Army Staff emphasized that India now possesses state-of-the-art surveillance systems, which are pivotal in monitoring and securing the borders. “The advancements in surveillance technology have drastically reduced the likelihood of enemy infiltration,” he said.

Modernized Weaponry

General Malik also discussed the upgrades in the Indian military’s weapon systems. He noted that the introduction of modern arms has provided the Indian forces with a substantial advantage in both defensive and offensive operations. “Our current arsenal is far more sophisticated and capable compared to what we had during the Kargil conflict,” he remarked.

Infrastructure and Logistical Support

In addition to technological advancements, General Malik pointed out the significant progress in infrastructure and logistical support. He explained that improvements in roads, communication networks, and logistical frameworks have been instrumental in enhancing the military’s operational efficiency. “These developments ensure faster mobilization and a more effective response during conflicts,” he said.

Lessons from the Past

Reflecting on the Kargil War, General Malik acknowledged that certain weaknesses at that time had allowed Pakistani forces to infiltrate Indian territory. However, he expressed confidence that the advancements made since then have fortified India’s defenses. “The measures we have taken over the past 25 years have greatly improved our ability to prevent similar incursions in the future,” he stated.

Looking Ahead

General Malik concluded by expressing optimism about India’s defense capabilities, asserting that the country is now better prepared to handle any potential threats. “With our superior surveillance technology, modern weaponry, and robust infrastructure, we are in a much stronger position to defend our borders and ensure national security,” he affirmed.

The remarks by General Malik serve as a testament to the continuous efforts and progress made by India in strengthening its defense mechanisms, ensuring that the sacrifices made during the Kargil War have led to a more secure and resilient nation.
