Bengaluru: The Karnataka Food Safety and Drugs Administration Department has executed a massive, city-wide crackdown over the last 48 hours, shutting down multiple premium establishments, issuing severe penalties, and uncovering shocking hygiene lapses across Bengaluru.
Operating under direct orders from the state administration, 30 specialized enforcement teams carried out relentless raids across major Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) zones, catching high-end restaurants, luxury hotels, and popular pubs entirely off guard starting with this week.
Elite Establishments Were Under Scanner
The most staggering discovery of the drive occurred at Skyye Lounge – an elite pub located in the upscale UB City in the Central Business District. Food safety officials uncovered 45 kg of rotten meat and beef heavily infested with visible fungal growth. The kitchen also housed expired dairy products — some dating back 10 days — along with 15 litres of toxic, repeatedly reused cooking oil. Given the immediate hazard to public health, authorities ordered the prominent lounge to shut down its kitchen operations on the spot.
Karnataka Health Minister UT Khader said “By initiating inspections at premium, five-star hotels and warehouses, the message is that no one is spared, aiming to force compliance across all levels and improve public health. The health of the public is the priority over punishing businesses. The goal is to correct wrongdoing and enforce cleanliness, noting that shocking conditions – such as rotten produce and reused oil that were found,” Khader emphasized.
The operation follows aggressive inspections at several five-star properties across the city. Teams raiding The Lalit Ashok had seized 76 kg of stale meat and 32 litres of expired milk. Simultaneously, over 100 kg of expired and unsegregated non-vegetarian inventory was confiscated from the Radisson Blu Atria. Other prominent culinary destinations—including Shangri-La Bengaluru, Four Seasons Hotel, and Vivanta Whitefield — were flagged for cross-contamination and critical lapses in food handling.
Massive Seizures and Immediate Legal Action
Over the past 48 hours alone, the department went full throttle and raided several food serving and storage establishments. Moving past ordinary street food vendors and elite hotels, 30 dedicated enforcement teams expanded their crosshairs into the backends of quick-commerce giants, corporate food distribution hubs, and prominent public sector canteens. The relentless drive exposed severe public health hazards, structural pest infestations, and heavy regulatory non-compliance. The officials seized and destroyed more than 132 kg of spoiled food items and discarded multiple litres of unsafe cooking oil. The clampdown also focused heavily on distribution and cold-storage networks, targeting centralized hubs supplying ingredients to the city’s top hospitality chains.
Furthermore, 18 vital food samples — including seafood, poultry, and spices — have been dispatched to state laboratories for immediate analysis Officials warned that licenses will face permanent cancellation if laboratory reports confirm intentional adulteration.

Inspections also revealed regulatory lapses at the Zomato Hyperpure unit and various restaurants, resulting in the seizure of unsafe food items.
Quick-Commerce and Supply Chains Hit Hard
The most significant disruption occurred during a surprise raid on a major quick-commerce Zepto Warehouse operated at the Nippon Express facility in Hoskote taluk. Food safety inspectors discovered what they described as “extremely unhygienic conditions,” documenting piles of organic trash, scattered food wrappers, empty boxes, and thick, accumulated grime covering the facility floor. Officials also intercepted open packages of chips and biscuits, alongside wet food products stored directly on the ground. Compounding the physical filth, the facility violated basic Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) rules with non-compliant labelling and widespread product misbranding. The entire Zepto warehouse was immediately sealed, and a formal case was recommended for adjudication.
The officials them made their way immediately to the Zomato Hyperpure’s Sakalawara Warehouse, a critical distribution engine supplying ingredients to hundreds of premium Bengaluru hotels. While the building’s infrastructure was visibly clean, investigators unearthed deep compliance failures inside the inventory. Teams seized 146 kg of raw chicken completely lacking the manufacturer’s mandatory FSSAI licence number. Additionally, 40 kg of garlic was sourced from an unlisted operator with an inactive licence. Inspectors also flagged mislabelled packages containing 300 kg of rice, 20 kg of dry fruits, and 15 kg of mixed masalas, alongside 10 kg of imported radish pickles left out in the open instead of required refrigeration.
Subsidised Canteens and Government Facilities Exposed
In a stunning development, government-supported facilities designed to feed the public safely were caught in identical traps.
Simultaneous raids targeted the central food preparation units of the state-subsidised Indira Canteens at Gottigere, Lingarajapuram, and Singasandra. All three facilities were slammed for misbranding and unhygienic food handling. Due to structural filth and hazardous storage, the entire Gottigere Indira Canteen Warehouse was shutdown and sealed on the spot.
The crackdown took an ironic twist at Magadi Road, where officials raided the canteen inside Arogya Soudha – the literal state headquarters of the Health and Family Welfare Department. Inside the health department’s own hub, inspectors discovered expired culinary ingredients, including out-of-date idli, rava and stale coconut powder. The canteen had completely skipped mandatory pest control routines, leading to major contamination warnings.
A similar grim discovery unfolded next to the Vidhana Soudha at the Legislators’ House, where the restaurant facility of the Mallige Hotel was inspected. Teams found an active cockroach infestation inside the main kitchen alongside a total absence of pest management logs.
Seizures, Penalties, and Legal Directives
Over the two-day surge, the Food Safety division confiscated and destroyed tonnes of unlabelled, expired, or improperly stored raw ingredients. Across the targeted distribution lines, teams gathered more than 40 distinct food samples — comprising pulses, edible oils, poultry, and spices—and dispatched them to designated state laboratories for composition and adulteration testing. Food Safety Commissioner K. Srinivas stated “Providing safe food is the government’s top priority, with 30 special teams deployed to thoroughly inspect hygiene and food standards. Strict notices have been issued to violating establishments, with legal action and penalties to follow under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, based on lab reports.”
Financial and statutory repercussions included immediate closure and sealing – executed at the Hoskote Zepto warehouse and the Gottigere Indira Canteen distribution point. Statutory Notices Issued to Zomato Hyperpure, the canteens at Arogya Soudha and Mallige Hotel, and 26 other food entities. Legal prosecutions included formal cases filed with local adjudicating officers against the operators of the three compromised Indira Canteens and Zepto, with heavy financial fines actively being calculated.
