Following unrest, police administration to keep a close eye on cybercrime in Haryana

Following the communal riots that broke out in Haryana’s Nuh on 31 July, the situation continues to remain tense in Nuh and adjoining districts including Faridabad, Palwal, and Gurgram adding to the concerns of the police and the administration.
Apart from this, it has come to the fore that Nuh has seen a dramatic increase in cyber crime incidents—according to official statistics, around 8,500 cases are being reported every month in Haryana. Data released by the state Crime Branch has revealed that around 300 incidents of online fraud have surfaced on an average, depicting the seriousness of the situation.
A cyber police station was established two years ago following the increasing incidents of cybercrime in Nuh district. This very police station was set ablaze during the riots. It is believed that with ill intentions, a group of rioters attacked the cyber station to destroy evidence and In this police station, cases were registered against the people here who committed cyber fraud on a large scale. It is believed that the rioters rammed a public bus into the boundary wall of the cyber police station to destroy it.
Then, they barged into the police station, damaged property and are believed to have destroyed official data pertaining to cyber crime cases. One official said that the rioters also allegedly tried to set documents on fire inside the station. TSVN Prasad, the state Home Secretary said “In the recent past, there has been an acute spike in cases of cybercrime and in view of this, Haryana Police has cracked down on cyber criminals in a big way and have registered cases on a large scale.”
Notably, no such incident had previously occurred in Nuh district. Additionally, the district is counted among the most backward districts of the country. It is worth noting that Nuh is counted among the poorest of the three dozen districts falling in the NCR, and is behind in education and healthcare. According to statistics, 80 percent of the population is of the people are from the Muslim community. According to the data of the National Crime Records Bureau, (NCRB) there have been several incidents of unrest between 2017 and 2021, but none of these were communally motivated.
There have been a total of 1,536 public riots during the five-year period. Of these, 524 riots took place over landed property and 376 family riots. Apart from this, there were 44 other types of riots and seven disputes.
