Fog Alert: Lower Speed Limits on Yamuna, Noida Expressways from December 15

To combat reduced visibility and slippery winter conditions, the speed limit for light vehicles on the Noida-Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressways will be reduced from 100 km/h to 75 km/h starting December 15, a seasonal measure enforced for two months.

To improve road safety during the winter fog season, traffic authorities have lowered speed limits on two major expressways in the National Capital Region. From December 15, the maximum speed for light vehicles on both the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and the Yamuna Expressway will be lowered to 75 kilometres per hour, down from the usual 100 km/h.

What Are the Revised Speed Limits?

The seasonal adjustment applies specifically to light passenger vehicles. The limits for heavier vehicles remain unchanged but are already lower than the standard limit.

The new regulations are as follows:

  • Light Vehicles (Cars, Bikes, etc.): Speed limit reduced from 100 km/h to 75 km/h on both expressways.
  • Heavy Vehicles: Limit remains 60 km/h on the Yamuna Expressway and 50 km/h on the Noida Expressway.

Officials stated this is a standard annual precaution enforced for approximately two months, typically from mid-December to mid-February, to address hazardous winter driving conditions.

Why Has This Decision Been Taken?

Noida Traffic Police say winter weather is the main concern. Fog and mist reduce visibility, and slippery roads make high speeds risky by increasing stopping distance.

Dr. Pravin Ranjan Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Noida Traffic), confirmed that a meeting with the Noida Authority would be held to formalize the measure. He added that the revised speed limits would also be updated on digital platforms like Google Maps, an initiative started during Road Safety Month in November.

What Other Safety Measures Are in Place?

Authorities are taking multiple steps to improve compliance:

Toll Plaza Advisories: JK Sharma claims that employees at toll booths in Jewar, Mathura, and Agra use loudspeakers to alert cars to safety hazards.Driver Outreach: Efforts include distributing pamphlets, giving tea to truckers on night duty, and fixing reflective tape on commercial vehicles.

Public Advisory: It is recommended that drivers prepare their cars for foggy conditions by turning on defoggers, replacing outdated wipers, and checking the fog lights.

What Does the Accident Data Reveal?

The enforcement underscores a critical need for improved safety. According to Noida traffic police data:

  • A startling 59,242 speeding tickets were issued between January and October of 2025.
  • In 2024, 462 people died and 966 were injured in 1,165 accidents on these expressways.
  • From January to August 2025 alone, 311 fatalities and 585 injuries were recorded in 797 accidents.
