Five days after voting was held on April 9, Assam is still seeing strong political activity, with record voter turnout indicating a close and high-stakes election.

Despite heavy pre-monsoon rain, polling crossed 84% in many constituencies.

In Dhubri, around 12.2 lakh voters cast their votes across five riverine seats at 1,548 polling stations. The election is seen as a major test for Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP government.

The 2026 Assembly polls are among the most competitive in recent years. Key seats include Jalukbari, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dispur and Tamulpur. BJP leaders, including Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, highlighted development and peace under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On the other side, Congress, AIUDF and regional parties have raised concerns over delimitation, rising prices and central interference. AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal is trying to regain support in lower Assam after poor performance in 2024.

Polling day saw strong participation from women and young voters. People stood in long queues even in rain-hit areas, including tea gardens and riverine regions. Election officials said voting was mostly peaceful, with only minor incidents reported.

The results will be declared on May 4.
