Farooq Abdullah comment on India-Maldives row escalating tension

National Conference MP Farooq Abdullah has weighed in on the escalating tensions between India and the Maldives, expressing bewilderment over the current discord. He highlighted India’s historical support for the Maldives during crises, recalling the country’s previous military intervention to aid the island nation.

“I don’t understand what is the reason behind this controversy today. Is it because of the hatred rising between Hindus and Muslims in India?” Abdullah questioned, hinting at potential domestic factors fueling the bilateral strain.

He further shed light on the expanding sphere of Chinese influence in the region, spanning nations like Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Abdullah emphasized the necessity for amicable relations between India and China despite the growing complexities.

Touching upon domestic concerns, Abdullah underscored the empowerment of women, stating, “The reservation for women is very important to empower them,” emphasizing the significance of greater female representation in decision-making roles.

While acknowledging that he had never visited the Maldives personally, Abdullah expressed regret over the brewing controversy, highlighting India’s consistent aid to the country during adversities.

“India has always helped the Maldives, when Maldives was in trouble it was India which sent its army there to save them and it returned back,” Abdullah affirmed.
