Ex-AIIMS director sounds alarm amid rising pollution

Renowned pulmonologist and former AIIMS director, Randeep Guleria, has issued a strong warning about the serious consequences of rising air pollution levels in Delhi and the Indo-Gangetic belt. During a conversation with newsX, he stressed the urgent need for immediate action, highlighting both short-term and long-term health risks associated with deteriorating air quality.
Guleria called for a comprehensive action plan, emphasising that the cost should not be a hindrance. He labeled air pollution as a silent killer, exacerbating existing health conditions and causing subtle yet severe health issues.
Despite potential solutions from other regions, he underscored the gravity of the situation, describing it as a medical emergency affecting not only the current generation but also those to come.
Guleria discussed the impact on different age groups, referencing studies that show impaired lung growth in children and increased risks of stroke, heart attacks, and dementia in the elderly.
Addressing indoor air pollution and mitigation strategies, the experienced pulmonologist highlighted the need for more data on the efficacy of air purifiers. He explained that factors like room size and ventilation play a crucial role in determining their effectiveness.
Guleria emphasised that indoor air quality is closely linked to outdoor air quality and that even in houses with closed doors, pollution can still enter due to factors like dust.
Dr Anil Arora also joined newsX and discussed Dr Guleria’s warning about the insidious impact of pollution on various organs. Inhaling this silent killer may lead to lung damage and affect multiple systems like the ears, digestive system, and heart.
